Phil Loedeman Clinches the Winter MCT-SRL Championship

Congratulations to Phil Loedeman of Kalamazoo, who picked up the MCT-SRL Winter Season Championship on March 17, 2010, with his third place finish at Flat Rock Speedway.

Phil LoedemanFlat Rock had been just ported to the Sim by master track builder, “Robo19” and the Michigan Circle Track Sim-Racing League was proud to be one of the first leagues to include this newly created track into its race schedule.  The MCT-SRL has visited a few other quarter mile tracks over the past three seasons, but in spite of that, the size of Flat Rock seemed to catch a number of the drivers off guard.  “It is a little disconcerting when you look into your rearview mirror and realize that the car about to pass you is your own”, joked rookie driver Dave Buck of California.

Of the drivers in attendance at Flat Rock for the league’s winter season finale, only Craig Curtis of DCraig CurtiseWitt had actual experience racing there. “This pretty much drives like the real track,” Curtis said, quickly adding that it was, “thankfully missing the huge bump coming out of turn two.”  His experience at the track was clearly evident as he scored his fifth win of the season, with a 9.8 second lead over second place Mark Howland.

Dayton Ohio’s Ken Gunn won the pole for the event, with a time of 12.570 seconds (71.599 mph).  Next to him on the front row was Kalamazoo’s Phil Loedeman who turned in a 12.619 second lap (71.321 mph).

The 80 lap event say three caution flags, the first occurring on the opening lap when Curtis in the No.74 traded paint with the No.14 of Lansing’s Kyle Drake, sending Drake’s car around.  On lap 23 former short track racer Dave Whiteside of Wasaga Beach, Ontario had a solo spin entering turn three.  During that caution peried, Drake ran into some unknown problems in the pits that took him out of the running.    The caution flew the final time on lap 37 when Steven Pearson of Kentucky also had a solo spin in turn three.Close race for 5th, between the No. 083 of Pearson and the No.73 of Paul.

The race restarted and it was a 40 lap green flag run through to the end. In typical short track style, there was good racing everywhere in the field. Including a battle for the fifth place spot that I won by a ridiculously small margin over Steven Person.  Pearson in the No.083 had the better run coming out of turn four. Another inch or two and he would have gotten me.  It was a lot of fun at a good track, which made for a great finish to the season.
