The Herald Pure Stocks took center stage on Friday, as Chad Lamson set a new track record in his Cadillac Seville with a 16.44. Heat races went to Tony Williams and Andrew Burton. Don Dennie took the early lead in the feature, but gave it up 5 laps later to Scott Beach. The 25-lap race went caution free, as Lamson took over the top spot on lap 14 and led the rest of the way to sew up his second Auto City track championship. Beach finished second followed by Charlie Thom, Craig Bastien and Gerry Persails, Jr.
The fun stuff started with Lamson taking the lead in the Figure-8 on lap 9 from Williams to claim the victory. Williams held on to second followed by Rex Perry, Burton and Beach. Don Dennie won the "Hare and the Hound" race, Lamson took the "Crack the Whip" event and Jim Bob Daniels captured the Skid car race.
The cars lined up by points on Saturday to decide the 2009 champions. In the Auto City Super Stocks John Turnbull, Jr. and Kyle Hayden won heat races. Hayden started on the pole and led all 40 laps for his 5th feature of the season. Pat Zorn kept the rest of the field behind him to take second followed by Shaun Whitney, Jeff Owens and Dennis Rederstorf. The "Flyin' Firefighter" Rederstorf earned enough points to take his first track championship.
It was the young and old in victory lane for the Dart Modifieds. Chris Stearns won his first ever Modified race at Auto City in the first heat while veteran Tony Brabbs took the second. Brabbs jumped in front to start the 40-lap feature, but 4 laps later Travis Eddy took over the top spot. Eddy took off and finished ahead of Nick Clemons in second to win the race and the championship. Rounding out the top 5 were Brabbs, Mike Luberda, Sr. and Stearns.
Curtis Hayden and Jim Miller, Jr. won heat races in the Modern Concrete Street Stocks. Miller started on the pole in the 30-lap feature and was harassed the entire race, first by Rob Blandino, then by Adam Rowe. Miller led all the way for the win, as Rowe finished second to secure his first-ever track championship. Rounding out the top 5 were Blandino, K.C. Snover and Hayden.
Chad Lamson clinched the track championship the night before in the Herald Pure Stocks, but there was still plenty of racing to do. Rick Dinius II, Mike Wines and Jeff Stinson won heat races. Andrew Burton pulled ahead to start the feature, but 3 laps later Lamson took over and put the exclamation point on his championship with his second straight feature win. Scott Beach took second followed by Burton, Craig Bastien and Stinson.
Nobody had anything for Paige Amy in the Spalding Insurance Hornets, as she won the heat race, then ran away to win the 20-lap feature. It was Paige's last race in her Dodge Neon, as she announced she's turning the reigns over to her younger sister, McKenzie. The real battle was between Jake Thompson and Loren Short; whichever driver finished ahead would take the championship. It came down to the final turn of the last lap, both cars running side-by-side. Short lost control coming out of turn 4 as Thompson grabbed second to take the track title. Rounding out the top 5 were Jake Thom, Andrew Shelton and Austin Pinnell.
The Figure-8 championship also came down to two drivers, Andrew Burton and Chad Lamson. Don Dennie jumped out in front to start the race but 5 laps later he got tangled up with Lamson, bringing out a red flag. Lamson returned to the track and restarted dead last. Burton took over the lead and held on for the win, but Lamson made it up to 4th place, good enough to take the title. Rounding out the top 5 were Tony Williams, Gerry Persails, Jr., Lamson and Scott Beach.
